Several Interesting Facts Related To Pheasant Hunting

Article by Clifford S. Magno

There no doubts just how exciting and thrilling pheasant hunting can be and in fact it is one of the best of all hunting sports. If you have ever listened to tales from those who have had the pleasure of engaging in pheasant hunting, you won’t find it hard to believe just how much thrill there is to be had from this sport. In fact, pheasant hunting is very popular in many US states though none of these states can provide quite the same level of thrill as South Dakota that is home to well over ten million pheasants.

Know Your Hens from the Roosters

To be sure, as someone involved actively in pheasant hunting, you must first of all learn to distinguish between hens and rooster pheasants before taking your aim and shooting a pheasant, though it must be admitted too that mostly it is not so difficult to tell one from the other. What’s more, at certain times you will also need to decide whether to hesitate before taking a shot or even hold back completely, especially as birds that rise into the setting or rising sun require that you make a major decision one way or the other.

A good course of action as far as pheasant hunting goes is to shoot pheasants with the sun behind your back. So, you will need to be aware that roosters make crowing and cackling sounds as soon as they take off, while on the other hand, hens don’t make many sounds and you can only tell them from the way that they beat their wings.

Also, before embarking on pheasant hunting trip you would do well to study some useful information that will help you make the right plans such as needing to be fully aware of hunting laws and also knowing beforehand the type of terrain as well as weather conditions you will be encountering on your hunt. You must be knowledgeable about how pheasants are flushed out under different weather conditions.

Some interesting facts related to pheasant hunting include learning that these birds are among the most beautiful birds on our planet. There are as many as forty-nine species and just one species that is not native to Asia where they are found in places as diverse as the snowcapped mountains of the Himalayas and the hot jungles of Indonesia.

Thus, you can plan taking your pheasant hunting trip to these exotic locations. Rest assured that you will get to experience more than just the thrill of shooting peasants because you will also get to experience new cultures, meet different kinds of people and of course, visit wonderful places.

Pheasant hunting, a bridge from medieval to modern times

Article by Razvan Jr

Ever since their first introduction in Europe in the 10th century, pheasants have become a popular game bird attracting hunters to engage in hunting them for centuries. Although many have changed through the ages, the way we live, the way wee see life, and so on, our delight of pheasant hunting has stayed untouched. We could say that it is a timeless practice for the modern hunter and it would seem fair to suppose it will continue to be for many years to come.

Pheasants are native to the Asian continent but have been widely introduced elsewhere, where they are bred to be hunted and are shot in huge numbers. The bird was brought to Britain around the 10th century but became extinct in the early 17th century; it was reintroduced in the 1830s and is now widely spread. Chronic reintroduction has made the pheasant an exceptionally variable species in regard to size and plumage. Pheasants were introduced in North America in 1913, and they’ve become more popular for hunting, rather than for food, although many hunting based restaurants serve pheasant meat.

Because pheasant hunting has proved to be an increasingly popular practice in the last decades, pheasants are now raised intensively in farms all over the United States and the United Kingdom, mostly. Pheasant farms meet about 10 million birds in the U.S. and 35 million in the U.K., which is very impressing bearing in mind that the number increases with each passing year. Birds are supplied both to hunting preserves/estates and restaurants, with smaller numbers being available for individual cooks. But eating pheasant meat can be unpleasant for some, as it is tough and dry; modern cookery generally uses moist roasting or farm-raised female birds.

Pheasant hunting is one of those sports in which the aid of a hound is invaluable, and without which it would be almost impossible to make a hunt. A well trained upland dog can be an important tool for the pheasant enthusiast, but it requires just the right training to be done. Unlike waterfowl hunters, a pheasant hunter doesn’t have to start an intensive training program but rather to focus on the crucial aspects such as obedience, testing his natural instincts towards bird hunting or building up a proper physical shape. Managing to stay away from useless, ineffective methods and centering your attention only on these facets of training will prove very important down the road.

Pheasant hunting is also a sport that sometimes makes better sense if done alongside friends or simply other hunters like you. Pheasants are well known for their ability to run swiftly and one generally good strategy is to use “blockers”, hunters stationed at the end of the field who shoot as birds break from cover. Besides this, when hunting besides fellow hunters, it is imperative that you wear an orange hunting vest because it may become dangerous and safety should always be put first.

To cut a long story short, pheasant hunting may have its roots back in medieval times but it’s now more popular than ever before. Although similar to other game bird hunts, it has features that differentiate it from the others in the group, and that is why it appeals to so many people worldwide.

Summary: Given its many centuries of history, it comes to no surprise that pheasant hunting is still a popular practice throughout the world, many believing that its high point is yet to be reached. Similar to other bird hunts as it may seem, at a closer inspection pheasant hunting clearly stands out as a self-governing sport because it enhances many aspects to the game bird hunting genre.

Hunting in the United States

Article by Keith Grable

North American hunting predates the United States by thousands of years, and was an important part of Native American cultures. Native Americans retain some hunting rights and are exempt from some laws as part of Indian treaties.Regulation of hunting is primarily regulated by state law. Regulations vary widely from state to state as to which specific game animals may be hunted. Some states make a distinction between protected species and unprotected species for which there are no hunting regulations. Hunters of protected species require a hunting license in all states, for which completion of a hunting safety course is sometimes required.

Game animals are divided into several categories for regulatory purposes. Typical categories are as follows:

Big game: White-tailed deer, Mule Deer, moose, elk, reindeer (caribou), bear, bighorn sheep, as well as exotic species often found in canned hunts. Small Game: cottontail rabbit, eastern gray squirrel. Furbearers: red fox, mink.Predators: Cougar (mountain lion/panther), coyote. Upland game bird: grouse, chukar, pheasant, Bobwhite Quail, dove. Waterfowl: duck, Canada goose

Hunting big game most often requires a “tag” for each animal harvested. Tags must be purchased in addition to the hunting license, and the number of tags issued to an individual is limited. In cases where there are more hunters than the quota for that animal, tags are usually assigned by lottery. Tags may be further restricted to a certain area. Hunting migratory waterfowl requires a “duck stamp” from the Fish and Wildlife Service, which is similar in concept to a tag.

Taking of animals other than big game is restricted by a “bag limit” and a “possession limit.” A bag limit is a maximum number of a specific animal that an individual can harvest in a single day. A possession limit is a maximum number of a specific animal species that can be in an individual’s possession at any time.

Guns used in hunting are also regulated. Regulations for big game hunting often specify a minimum caliber for firearms. The use of rifles is often banned for safety reasons in areas with high population density. Specific seasons for bow hunting or muzzle-loading black powder guns are often established to limit competition with hunters using more effective firearms.

Hunting in the United States is not associated with any particular group. In fact, most Americans support legal hunting, but relatively few Americans actually hunt. At the beginning of the 21st century less than 10% of the population actually hunted.

Regulation of hunting within the United States dates from the 19th century. Local hunting clubs and national organizations provide hunter education and help protect the future of the sport by buying land for future hunting use. Each year millions of dollars in federal excise taxes are distributed to state agencies to support wildlife management programs. A key task of Federal and state park rangers and game wardens is to enforce laws and regulations related to hunting, including species protection, hunting seasons, and hunting bans.

Hunting Laws & Regulations in America

By: Matt Paterson
Posted: Oct 07, 2008

]]>

In the sport of hunting a few things are involved, Ghillie Suit, rifles, wildlife, and ammo come into play. Hunting was around ten years ago, 50 years ago, 100 years ago and many centuries before that; and will probably occur a few hundreds year from today. In North America hunting predates Canada, Mexico and the United States combined. Though, today hunting has changed.

Native Americans retain their hunting rights and exempt from various state and federal laws. The case for ordinary Americans is different. They are governed by heavy regulation. As much as those regulations are to protect hunters, they are also put into place to protect endangered animal species.

Like with many laws in the United States, hunting laws and regulations differ from state-to-state. Different states will have very specific demands involving protected species, but will rarely limit the hunting of unprotected species. A term you may hear frequently in hunting is the term: Varmints. Varmints refers to unprotected non-game animals that are seen by many individuals as pests. Varmints pose a threat to farmers’ crops, other livestock, landscaping, infrastructure or even domesticated pets. As hunting varmints is seen as a means of controlling unwanted predatory animals, there will most likely be very little to no regulation governing these animals. Some varmints include numerous different types of rodents, coyotes, birds, foxes, cars and hogs.

Big Game Animals, which refers to animals like bighorn sheep, deer, reindeer, elks, bear, and moose. Small Game Animals refers to squirrels and cottontail rabbits. Furbearers Animals include two species of fox – the red fox and mink. Predator Animals refer to cougars, which includes mountain lions and panthers as well as coyotes. In the bird category, animals include upland bird, like grouses and pheasants, as well as waterfowl, which includes duck and geese.

Now you just can’t go and start shooting these animals, because before you go hunting you will need a hunting license. Getting a hunting license is not as easy as 1-2-3, as you may have thought. To qualify for a license you will usually be asked to complete a hunting safety course. On top of test you will have to purchase tags for each animal you plan on hunting. To control the amount of wildlife is kills tags are often limited, especially in areas where there are more hunters than there are quotas for animal species.

Hunting is not a silly game of shoot and capture. Hunting is a serious sport not to be taken lightly.

Virtual Hunting For Amateurs – 21st Century Duck Hunting Styles

By: Abhishek Agarwal
Posted: Feb 17, 2009

]]>

With a computer in every home across North America, the hunter has dozens of options to stave off his boredom in the off-season. Soon after packing up all their gear and storing it in the basement, hunters are anxious for the next season to start, but he can take advantage of some of the online hunting options now available.

Hunting games online offer the hunter a lot of options; he can hunt big game, such as bear or moose, or small game like rabbit and squirrel, and all the sizes in between! Duck hunting online can be a particularly fun undertaking because the hunter has so many options. He can choose a variety of different locations and landscapes to hunt, from different states, to different countries. He has the choice of his weapon and ammunition, and he can even choose and train his own bird dog.

Many of the games available are scored upon the number of ducks killed, and the time it takes to do it in. The games that offer a hunting dog also often award points based upon the dog’s obedience and performance. It’s also essential for the virtual hunter to take care of his dog as it will tire and begin to disobey if neglected. Some hunting games also allow the hunter to play alone or against other hunters.

While some may not think it, duck hunting games can also be shockingly realistic. Often the weather plays an important role in the hunt, and if it’s raining and thundering, the graphics and sound effects allow the hunter to feel like he’s right in the field, without getting wet! Snow and fog, and of course bright and sunny days are also common.

While virtual hunting may not be a substitute for the real thing, it certainly works to stave off a hunter’s boredom while he waits for the next season to roll around. It can also help to improve his game, as he develops better reaction times and his aim improves. Hunting games online are also a great option for kids; if you’re looking to find away to introduce your child to the sport of hunting, this is a fun way to familiarize them. The same also goes for newcomers to the sport; if you’re not sure if duck hunting is for you, try out a few of the games online to get a taste for the hunt.

Using a Scope For Deer Hunting is a Must

Article by Scot Hubbard

There are several hunting accessories in the market today to choose from, but the most important hunting accessory is indeed a good quality rifle scope. Choose a scope that fits your hunting situation. Choosing the right equipment for the job creates a big difference between success and failure.

Most deer hunters use a riflescope. As hunters began a little older, it becomes harder to straight up their shots with the use of only the open sites on their rifle. Some hunters like to use a scope to make sure they get the right breed of animal.

Additional features of a scope develop hunter’s accuracy in their shot. It also reduces wounded animals in the field caused by inaccuracy. Thus, these reasons made many deer hunters to add a magnifying scope to their rifle.

Deer hunting is a success when it comes with a good pair of handy binoculars. Binocular works well in spotting and identifying of game. A scope also does the same thing with binoculars; it prepares you well with your shots. Time should not be wasted in putting the binoculars down or picking up your rifle. Lastly, locate the deer again to line up for the shot. This method takes enough time that could possibly lead to a missed shot.

So, if you want to improve your chances on your next deer hunting experience then add a good quality magnifying scope to your favourite deer rifle. You may consider the top selling rifle scope in town, the Bushnell Rifle scopes. They have all the scopes you need for different seasons and distance. It is so affordable but contains the highest mark for standard quality in optical features. Bushnell Rifle scopes provide clearer and larger images compared to other scopes. Thus, it certifies that you have a 100% accuracy.

Deer Hunting Shot Placement

It’s that time of year when outdoorsmen feel a certain giddy longing that they don’t feel during the hot summer months. They can feel it coming on stronger like a quickening and can smell it in the crisp clean fall air. It’s a feeling like no other. Like a deeply planted seed rooted completely into your soul. And when this feeling comes around. The big game deer hunting season has arrived!

With a childlike enthusiasm you know it’s now time to dust off your hunting gear. Sharpen you hunting knives, oil down your deer hunting rifle; test your tree climbing equipment and stock up on hunting supplies such as hunting clothes, deer scents and maybe a new grunt call. But before the opening day of the hunting season arrives and it’s time to do the necessary pre hunting rituals that all good experienced hunters always do every year, such as scouting for deer sign, looking for tracks, scrapes, rubs and scant. Finding a good climbing tree stand or ground blind placement can sometimes seam difficult and downright unnerving. You want that perfect spot were you know you will always see the game that you are pursuing. And you want to be able to take the correct actions when the big moment arrives to bag that huge deer of a lifetime. So here are some Supreme Deer Hunting Tips that can help you take that big buck that you have always dreamed of. Deer Hunting Shot Placement

Before we begin I would like to tell you a story. A story about myself and why I have written this article. As a young boy I was naturally attracted to nature. My father was really not an outdoorsman. We went fishing at times but never went hunting. As I got older a friend of mine, Bob invited me along with him on a deer hunt. I loved it and I was from that day on, hooked for life! I proceeded to purchase my first deer hunting riffle, a 30.06 Remington. We hunted every single year and he would always harvest a deer. Usually a spike or a four pointer, but I had bigger plans. Deer Hunting Shot Placement

I wanted to get those big eight pointers with the nice heavy racks. I proceeded to test every location in every situation I could find. I read and consumed every deer magazines known to man like a mad man. Bob would always say, “Why do read those things? You won’t be able to get big dear like in those magazines”! He couldn’t have been more wrong. He refused to take pointers from any of my books or magazines. Don’t get me wrong, my friend Bob taught me a lot of the basics and good tactics. He was a very good teacher, but at some point I began to get bigger and better bucks than the teacher.

As I read all the magazines and books and I would learn new ideas and strategies. Bob would hunt the open woods and I would hunt the thicker stuff. I started to take nicer and larger bucks each year. And Bob, Well… let’s just say, he has a whole garage full of spikes and four pointers on the walls. Deer Hunting Shot Placement

Now even though I learned a lot from those hunting magazines. They never really helped me with some critical things. Stratagies that I had to and had learned in the field. Like spotting that perfect place to put a stand in any hunting location. Or the perfect way to spot a deer and take the shot without ever losing the game. Let’s face it, if you can’t find the perfect spot to hunt from, you will never see deer, see enough deer or get consistently close enough to take deer when you’re hunting. And if you don’t know the correct way to spot, respond and shoot the deer, you are not going to have that huge rack on your wall or venison in the freezer.

I’ve had to learn that the hard way. By years of trial and error. I have decided to put the best advice I have learned out of all those years, brake them down into a few critical tips and provide them here. They may not seem to be much on the surface. But they may be some of the best tips you may ever find. Deer Hunting Shot Placement

Big Game Hunting Essentials

By: Richard Hansen
Posted: Nov 25, 2009

]]>

The world of hunting western huge game animals isn’t the same in many ways over the past decade. Numerous reasons have led on to steeled hunting conditions for todays outdoorsman. Talking especially to deer and elk species, herds have been negatively affected in several manners. A few of the more important considerations include giving out too many tags per unit, predator preservation, illness, a larger number of hunters, the length of the season, and forest management. The modern hunter can push harder by exploiting the sleeker outdoor hunting gear high tech that is available today.
This review references 3 major methods to help attain your goals. The first choice is to pay big greenbacks for prize hunting tags. But if you fall into the class of the other 90%, like myself, then there is truly 2 strategies to enhance your odds. This might include going further into the badlands, hunting places that others might not check out, going where the game are from light to dark, scouting throughout the year, and learning animal habits.

Here are 2 necessary hunting gear packages, 1 for the bow hunter and 1 for the rifle hunter.

Sitka Ascent Jacket and Pant Combo – Sitka gear has taken hunting clothing to the next level with light-weight breathable but rough and warm gear. Eberlestock bow and rifle pack – This lightweight back pack has the facility to contain your gear and pack out your game.
Knives of Alaska Brown Bear Combo – This Knives of Alaska combination set permits you to skin any deer or elk with the pup skinner and hack thru bone with the cleaver.

RIFLE HUNTING EQUIPMENT:

Badlands 2200 Hunting Pack – This back pack backpack offers the ultimate capability to pack all your desires in with you, and all your game out with you. With light, strength, numerous pockets, rifle sling, and beef packing capabilities, this pack is one of the more versatile on the market.
Rivers West Jacket and Pant – streams West offers apparel that’s tricky and warm enough for those cold rifle hunting days. Both these garments are water-resistant and extremely durable.
Knives of Alaska light hunter combo set – The light hunter combo brings the great skinning ability with both knives as well as an extremely pointy tummy hook that will work with deer and elk.

Although there are more products that you may use and need while bow hunting or rifle hunting seasons, outside of your bow and rifle, these items are critical in supporting your hunting fortunes. Good luck on your next hunting journey.

Richard Hansen – About the Author:

The author is an accomplished hunting gear professional and works with Diggs Outdoor Hunting Fishing and Camping gear to create their performance induced line of outdoor gear.
